Do you know that music can help you learn a new language?
Foreign languages and music have something in common: They are both languages.
They have rhythm, harmony and melody. They both exist within each and every one of us. We just need to discover their existence. “But how?” one may ask.
In our school, with the accompaniment of musical instruments in class, the new words, the syntax and the grammatical phenomena become songs. Music, singing and movement form the building materials which develop our students’ creative expression in the target language.
The acquisition of the target language becomes a game and the need to learn new vocabulary and complex sentence structure “by heart” is something of the past.
This is part of the holistic approach in teaching and the future in foreign language education.
The theatre is a language, not foreign but familiar
Theatre means expression, creativity, imagination.
All languages are better experienced through drama activities
By actively participating in theatrical plays using the target language, foreign language learning becomes fun and easy. The children produce stories when performing their role in the language they are learning. Their body is mobilized and all their senses are activated. They are able to overcome all their phobias and hesitations and unfold their creativity.
The children’s interest does no longer lie in memorising grammatical phenomena or complex syntax, but in using the target language to express themselves. Thus, it becomes familiar; just as familiar is one’s need to express their feelings and opinions.
All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women mere puppets
– William Shakespeare
Project based learning & presentation skills
PBL is an instructional strategy in which students work cooperatively to create a product, presentation or performance.
Physician and educator Maria Montessori, introduced PBL, launching what has become an international educational movement based on the idea that children learn best through their environments, not through memorization.
PBL Helps Students Develop Skills for Living in a Knowledge-Based, Highly Technological Society
The old-school model of passively learning facts and reciting them in the classroom is no longer sufficient to prepare students to survive in today's world. Collaborating on projects and presenting the findings to an audience require that students have both fundamental skills such as reading and writing and 21st century skills such as teamwork, problem solving, presentation skills, decision making, time management, information synthesizing, ability to use technology.
Learning not to fear
By mastering the art of presenting to the public at school-age, children grow up into adults who have learned to combat what is scientifically proved to be man’s greatest fear: Public speaking.
In today’s world of education, the classroom is no longer bounded by four walls.
With the help of technology and the Cambridge Schools network, our students have the opportunity to communicate live with their peers all over the world.
Zachariou Language School, in an effort to promote international learning, has recently formed partnerships with the schools “Maharaja Agarsain Public School Ashok Vihar” in India, “Our Lady’s Preparatory School and Day Nursery” and “Oakington Manor Primary School” in England. Via teleconferences with these schools, we have discussed, exchanged cards, emails and skype-calls. We have worked together on various projects and compared and contrasted life in our countries.
Our students are privileged to learn in a modern, high-tech classroom and enjoy these great possibilities and benefits.
A few words about the Tomatis® method
The voice contains only what the ear hears
– Professor Alfred, Tomatis
Are you a child or an adult facing problems with foreign language learning? Do you wish to learn a foreign language in half the time that conventional methods offer? We have the answer. It’s called The Tomatis® Method and it works miracles.
The Tomatis® Method is a pedagogical method used to improve the listening of a person.
The goal of the Tomatis® Method is to give to anyone wishing to learn a foreign language the possibility of truly appropriating its rhythms and sounds by allowing the ear to adapt itself effectively to this foreign music, so that it may analyze and reproduce it. This requires that students free themselves from the usual rhythmic and sonorous habits of their native language, habits that often have a negative influence on learning a new language.
